Topic: ”Modern Quilting Lecture and Trunk Show”

Although modern quilters vary in their style, all modern quilts are constructed using a group of techniques and characteristics that identify them as “Modern”: minimalism, negative space, improvisation, use of bold colors and graphics, modern traditionalism, and alternative grid structures. During this lecture, Kathy explores the Modern Quilt movement. Her presentation includes quilt photos from QuiltCon, the Modern Quilt Show. The subsequent trunk show features her personal quilts as visual examples of various Modern techniques.

Kathy grew up in Minnesota, daughter of a creative Mother who encouraged her to experiment with different mediums. She began working with fabrics as a teenager while employed by “Stretch and Sew” and subsequently took her first quilting class at a local quilt store.

During her early years of quilting, she used old X-ray film as raw material for templates and made all her blocks by hand.  Ten years later she read, “It’s Okay If You Sit on my Quilt” by Mary Ellen Hopkins and discovered the efficiency and joy of rotary cutting.

Kathy’s evolution as a quilter has drawn her to embrace modern and contemporary styles. She enjoys talking about all aspects of quilting, loves to try new techniques and share her passion with others. Her first quilt show entry was judged “Best of Show” by Interior Decorators and Museum Curators.

Kathy is a current member of RNQG and Runamok Modern Quilt Guild, as well as President of the Rhode Island Modern Quilt Guild.  She is a professional longarm quilter, speaks about Modern Quilting and teaches classes focused on improvisational quilting and contemporary or modern aesthetic.

Saturday Workshop: Metro Rings

Want to learn a fast, fun way to sew curves (without clipping or pinning)? If so, this is the class for you!

Using the Quick Curve Ruler by Sew Kind of Wonderful, class participants will construct a contemporary Double Wedding Ring quilt.  The clever pattern utilizes oversized blocks and subsequent squaring for improved accuracy, taking the stress out of making seams meet precisely.

The curved sections are made using 2.5" strips, (precuts are a great option). Students will be amazed by how easily the design comes together!
