Ann P. Shaw               Website: annshawquilting.com
Topic: ”Photos and Quilts”

In this presentation, Ann discusses the ways in which she adapts photographs in her pieced quilt designs, her approach to taking pictures that inspire pictorial quilts, and the design choices that affect the look of her quilts.  She discusses what sparked the idea of “Gesture” and how she introduced this composition technique into the quilt world in 2015.

Ann specializes in pieced art quilts based on the methods developed by Ruth B. McDowell.  In addition, she creates modern/abstract art quilts using repeated asymmetrical block patterns of her own design.  After a long career as a professor of anthropology and forensics, Ann abandoned academia to follow her long-time passion, founding “Ann Shaw Quilting”. She designs pieced quilt patterns and offers a variety of quilting classes, quilt retreats and lectures for Guilds and shops throughout the US and Canada.

Ann has taught classes at prestigious venues including the The Quilter’s Hall of Fame, A Quilter’s Affair, Empty Spools Seminars, Oregon’s Stormy Weather Artist Weekend, Historic Deerfield (MA) Workshops and Cascadia Quilt Workshops. In 2011, she was honored as the Featured Artist at Empty Spools Seminars. Her quilts have appeared in books and magazines: “Indah” was featured in “Its My Nature” [The Quilt Life Magazine, June 2013] and “Ghost Experiment” was included in the book Ghost Layers [Katie Pasquini Masopust, 2001]. She also appeared on The Quilt Show with Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson in March of 2017.

Workshop: Flowers of the Gorge

PLEASE NOTE: This workshop occurs on the SAME DAY as, but PRIOR TO the Guild meeting!

Flowers have been an enduring source of inspiration for quilters; many traditional quilt blocks feature flower patterns. The remarkable array of miniature wildflowers that can be found in the Columbia River Gorge and surrounding hills of the Cascade Mountains inspired Ann to design a series of flower designs.  Based on the design and piecing techniques of Ruth McDowell, these designs take traditional patchwork a step further through the use of unexpected fabric choices.

Students in this workshop will learn the basics of Ruth’s piecing techniques and her fascinating use of fabrics. Any of the patterns in Ann’s “Flowers of the Gorge” pattern series may be used. These will be available for purchase during the class.
