TIME TO PIECE THE BLOCKS! ARE YOU READY TO GET SEWING?
MAKE SURE
- YOU HAVE A NEW, SHARP NEEDLE IN YOUR SEWING MACHINE
- USE A ¼” SEAM.
You will be making 27 blocks.
For each block you construct you will need the following:
Four (4) matching 2½” X 2½”
complementary fabric squares e.g.
Remember -- the cutting directions suggested that you cut the 2⅜” X 2⅜” squares a little bigger (2½” X 2½”). If you didn't do this and cut them 2⅜”, that's OK. It works but will be a little more difficult. |
One (1) 3½” x 3½” focus fabric square e.g.
One (1) 4¼” x 4¼” background fabric square e.g.
Four (4) 2" x 2" background fabric squares e.g.
Instructions:
- Using four (4) matching 2½” X 2 ½” complementary fabric squares and a 4¼” x 4¼” background fabric square, make four (4) flying geese units. *NOTE: Instructions for flying geese technique can be found near the bottom of this page or you may watch a youtube video of the process <here>.
- Press seams of the flying geese as shown:
- Arrange the four (4) flying geese units from Step 1 with the 3½” x 3½” focus fabric squares into rows as shown below. Press seams in the direction indicated by the arrows.
- Sew the rows together; press seams as shown.
- Repeat steps 1 - 4 until you have a total of twenty-seven (27) star blocks. This may become a bit tedious, but be patient and take your time!

Flying Geese Construction:
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the wrong side of each of 4 of the 2 ½” complementary squares . This is the cutting line.
Next draw lines ¼” away on both sides of the cutting line. Place the 2-2 ½” complementary squares on opposite corners of your 4 ¼” background square right sides together. They will overlap in the center, as shown in the photo on the left.
Sew down both lines that are ¼” off the center line.
Cut along the drawn center line. You will have 2 triangles (Figure 2). Press seams toward the small complementary fabric triangles (Figure 3).
Place a 2 ½” complementary square on the point of the each background fabric, then sew on both lines that are ¼” away from the center line. (also Figure 3).
Cut on the center line, then press seams towards the small complementary triangle (Figure 4). You should have four (4) flying geese. Trim them to 2" x 3½" rectangles (Figure 5)
