By definition, a squiggle is a short, irregular, winding or curved line.  The term is often used to describe a scrawl, doodle or illegible handwriting.   Lee Sproull applies the word to describe some of her fiber art creations.

Squiggles begin with strips of striped or printed fabric cut with wavy edges which are sewn together. These irregular “strip sets” are cut cross-wise into straight or curved shapes.  The fabrics are typically prints, stripes, plaids, etc., rarely solid colors.  One or more squiggles can be used as a design element in any composition.  Lee will show examples of squiggles and squiggle-based compositions and briefly discuss design choices in selecting fabrics for strips.

During class, Lee will demonstrate how to cut a wavy strip, how to sew two wavy strips together, and how to make a strip set.  Students will then proceed to cut their own strip sets and stitch them together to create squiggles.

The workshop will conclude with a discussion of different ideas for using squiggles in compositions.
