Topic: Two Questions, Many Answers
Lee Sproull is recognized as a creator of abstract art that uses a variety of quilt-making materials, tools, and methods. Her work explores ideas about the layered constructs of perception and meaning.
When people look at Lee’s quilts, the two most common questions are: “Where do you get your ideas?” and “How do you make it?” Lee asks herself the same two questions over and over with each quilt she creates. The questions don’t really change over time, but her answers change and develop with each piece.
In her talk this evening, Lee answers the questions. Her finished quilts serve as case examples of each response.
Lee began quilting seriously in 2015 after retiring from her a career as a college professor. She lives in the woods of western Massachusetts with long views of the Connecticut River Valley. Her work is inspired by the colors and figures that surround her. Much of her recent work embodies shapes and concepts of branching. They represent choice points, pathways, alternatives, divergences.
Many of Lee’s quilts have been exhibited in juried and invitational shows across the country. Several of her quilts have appeared in Quilt Con Magazine as well as other artsy publications.
